Questions:
- How much does a person’s self-perception affect the decisions they make?
- In good novels, there is usually a change of the main characters’
- Evidence of low self-esteem of Adam:
- “He never thought of himself as attractive...” (pg 88)
- Why would someone with a strong moral compass have low self esteem?
- When they live in a society that doesn’t allow them to act according to their principles?
- Leads to guilt.
- How does a feeling of detachment affect Adam in the book?
- Causes a desire to escape / a desire to go home.
- Evidence
- As he comes home from the camp, he feels as though he doesn’t belong (pg 108).
- Detached from people: Adam is unable to love Magdalena as much as she loves him (pg 133).
- Do the morals Adam developed during his childhood in one environment apply to the situations in his current environment?
- How do Adam’s morals relate to the “law”?

- So far, we feel mostly pity toward him.

- To sympathize with a character’s situation, we need to identify with them.

- Can Adam overcome the violence that was done to him as a child?
- For character development, Adam must transform from a situation without resolution to a situation with a resolution.
